Hanayomi Japanese Dictionary

Privacy Policy

Effective 21 July 2026

English · 日本語 · Português · Español

Short version: the Hanayomi dictionary app collects nothing. There is no account, no sign-in, no advertising, no analytics, and no tracking. The dictionary is bundled inside the app and searches run on your device, so ordinary use sends no data anywhere at all.

Information we collect

None. We do not collect, store on our servers, or transmit any personal data. The app has no login and no user accounts, and it does not request access to your contacts, photos, location, microphone, camera, or any other personal information.

What your searches do

Your searches are answered by a dictionary database that ships inside the app. What you type is used to query that local database and nothing else: it is not sent to us, not sent to any third party, and not written to any history or log. Closing the app discards it.

Data stored on your device

The app saves exactly two small preferences locally on your device only, so it opens the way you left it:

Neither leaves your device, and deleting the app removes them.

Advertising, analytics & third parties

The app shows no advertisements, includes no third-party analytics, crash-reporting, or tracking SDKs, and integrates no social or advertising networks. (The hanayomi.com website is a separate matter — see This website below.)

Network use

Searching, reading a word, and reading a kanji all work with the network switched off. Some optional extras may use the internet if you choose them in a future version, such as downloading additional dictionary content or playing audio pronunciations. These are opt-in, are used only to fetch the content you asked for, and carry no personal information about you.

This website

The website at hanayomi.com — as distinct from the app — uses Google Analytics in cookieless mode: it sets no cookies, stores no identifier in your browser, and is used only to count page views and see which pages are read. There is no advertising and no cross-site tracking. As with any website you visit, your IP address is necessarily part of the connection; Google derives a coarse location from it and discards it. The app does none of this.

Children's privacy

Hanayomi is suitable for all ages. Because the app collects no personal information from anyone, it collects none from children.

Dictionary data & licensing

The app is built from open dictionary sources, including the JMdict/EDICT and KANJIDIC files, which are the property of the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group and are used in conformance with the Group's licence. The full per-source attribution is in the app under Credits & licenses, and on hanayomi.com/credits.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we will update this page and revise the effective date above. Because the app collects no data, any changes are expected to be minor.
